(Make-up) Projectiles Launch for all ages!

Join us for the make-up launch of Professor Powers's own hand-made floating arm trebuchet! This is the 2nd part of a 2-part class offered previously. Students who attended a previous Projectiles class can attend the launch with no additional cost. If you would like to attend the launch and haven't attended either earlier Projectiles class, contact us for more information. The launch will take place in the Hillcrest High School Soccer field, at 1009 W. Smith Street, in Springfield, just north of the Ozarks Empire Fairgrounds.

Rockets! for ages 5-11

Rockets are always a favorite of Professor Powers.  This year we will be launching Rockets made of foam and paper.  They are easy to build and even easier to launch!  Each child will be able to do multiple launches. 

Cost for the class is $10 per child. Class will be held in the Visual Arts Classroom in the Creamery Arts building, located at 411 N. Sherman Parkway in Springfield. We will launch rockets outside in Jordan Valley Park.

Potions for ages 10-15 CLASS IS FULL

Wisps of fog come pouring through the window.  The sound of a gurgling cauldron is interrupted by the screams of a woman.  As you turn to see the source of that scream, you seen a jack-o-lantern spewing steaming hot foam from it's orifices.  You turn to run, but are mesmerized by...are those ghosts?  Why is that liquid changing from clear to black over and over?  What is going on?  POTIONS. Come experience some of the best, spookiest chemical reactions ever known.

Class 3: Quality Control - Once the beer has been bottled for a month it will be time to enjoy the fruits of our labor.  Participants will have the opportunity to sample the beer they helped make while enjoying some delicious grilled meats.  All are welcome to bring food to share with their fellow brewers.  Participants will be welcome to bring their fermented beverages home.

Tangrams foster an intuitive sense of geometric awareness and problem solving abilities. students will discuss the legend and history of Tangrams and the science and mathematics behind how they work. Students will complete a variety of Tangram puzzles and make their own set as well. Taught by our special guest, Professor Karen Remington, an award winning math instructor.

Science in the Field – Do you have questions or concerns about our food production system? Are you curious about the role of biotechnology in agriculture and what “GMO’s” are? How has technology changed agriculture and what does the future hold? There is a growing disconnect between consumers and producers that needs to be addressed. Join us for an open discussion on production agriculture and the role that science plays. Homebrewing for Grownups - Part 2

Class 2: Bottling - The following month, after the fermentation is complete, it will be time to bottle the beer.  Participants are asked to bring 10 empty and clean beer bottles (no screw-tops).  A bottling party will commence where sanitation techniques will be demonstrated to prevent contamination.  The science of carbonation will be discussed, as well as the benefits of aging.  Alternative bottling techniques will also be discussed.
