This is a three part class teaching the basics of brewing a batch of beer. Each class will be held on the patio of Homegrown Foods, at 607 S Pickwick Ave in Springfield, Missouri. The cost for all 3 classes is $30, or $50 for couples, due on April 11th. 21+ please!
Class 1: Brewing - We will start by brewing a basic batch of beer using dried malt extract, specialty grains, hops, and yeast. There will be ample discussion of proper brewing techniques, the use of various equipment, and the science behind it all. The class will take around two hours and will be a time to enjoy the fruits of fermentation.
Class 2: Bottling - The following month, after the fermentation is complete, it will be time to bottle the beer. Participants are asked to bring 10 empty and clean beer bottles (no screw-tops). A bottling party will commence where sanitation techniques will be demonstrated to prevent contamination. The science of carbonation will be discussed, as well as the benefits of aging. Alternative bottling techniques will also be discussed.
Class 3: Quality Control - Once the beer has been bottled for a month it will be time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Participants will have the opportunity to sample the beer they helped make while enjoying some delicious grilled meats. All are welcome to bring food to share with their fellow brewers. Participants will be welcome to bring their fermented beverages home.
