Welcome to the application process for the Professor Powers Young Chemists Academy!
This highly selective program is intended for bright, engaged and inquisitive kids who don’t shy away from a challenge. Young Chemists Academy will act as a very hands-on introduction to many chemistry concepts that are not typically covered until high school and beyond, but will also encourage creative problem solving and alternative learning styles, which will assist your child in and out of the classroom!
Young Chemists will learn about stoichiometry, chemical analysis, atomic and molecular structure, and types of chemical reactions. This will be accomplished through lively hands-on activities including lab experiments, solid fuel rockets and some beautiful chemistry art projects. Upon completion students will have a firm understanding of important chemistry concepts and how they apply to the world around them.
This camp will be held in the Visual Arts Classroom in the Creamery Arts Center at
411 N. Sherman Parkway in Springfield, from June 20th-24th, from 1:30 to 4pm daily. Registration is just $200 for the week-long camp, including materials. Although preferred applicants will be entering grades 4th-9th, younger students will be considered based on qualifications. Due to the nature of this camp and the resources and space required, this camp is limited to 10 students and permission of Professor Powers. Applicants should have a firm understanding of multiplication and division. Basic algebra is not required, but it is recommended.
Qualified applicants will be selected on a first come, first served basis. After your application has been submitted, you will be contacted via email within one week regarding your child's acceptance. Registration and payment is due immediately upon receiving the acceptance notification. The application process will be open until noon on Monday, April 11th.
